Reuters reported on Sunday morning that US National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster has reassured his South Korean counterpart, Kim Kwan-jin, that the US would honor an agreement under which Seoul will only offer the land for the US-backed THAAD missile system, without paying for any further installation and operating costs. This deal was reached during the administration of Barack Obama, but was thrown into doubt by recent comments from current US President Donald Trump. McMaster also told Kim that the alliance between the two countries remained the US’s "top priority" in the Asia-Pacific region, according to Reuters. The phone call came after Trump said on Thursday that he wanted South Korea to bear the cost of THAAD.
