The best way to know about yourself is to look through other people’s eyes. That’s why when a group of young foreigners came to Beijing, not only do they get to know the city and the country, so do their Chinese counterparts.
Eight short documentaries about Beijing life were featured at Beijing Normal University on Tuesday, all directed by foreign students.

The young foreign directors, six from Georgia and two from Ecuador, shot ten-minute films themed “people▪home▪nation”, to present Beijingers’ family lives from an outsider's perspective.
These young people came to China for the “Watch China” project by Beijing Normal University, which has been held annually since 2010. Within five years, the number of foreign participants has increased from 10 to 100 in 2015.
Professor Huang Huilin, director of the International Communication of Chinese Culture Research Institute of Beijing Normal University, said that the project will be a valuable experience for every one involved. She said the project has made hundreds of friendships between Chinese and foreign students, “the 17 days will be beautiful memory to cherish for your whole life.”

Zhou Wen, a professor of digital media at Beijing Normal University, said the documentaries spotlit the old and children, which are also concerned topics of Chinese people.
“They can get to the heart of Chinese culture to see the real China,” she said.
“The project is interesting, for the participants view a city they hardly know from a different angle,” Professor David Leeds from Georgia National University said.

People from different countries teamed together to create diversified works, which showed respect to Beijing city and Chinese people’s lifestyles, David said.
The featured documentaries are part of works by the foreign students participating in the "Watch China" project, who went to cities across China to present a panorama of the country.
