如果我能使一顆心免於破碎
By Emily Dickinson
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain ,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
如果我能使一顆心免於破碎,
我將不會虛度此生。
如果我能減輕一個人的痛苦,
或平息一個人的悲傷,
或幫助一隻昏迷的知更鳥
回到它的巢居
我將不會虛度此生.
Emily Dickinson(1830-1886) only published seven poems during her life time.However she is considered one of the greatest American poets of the 19th century.She was an unusual person.Unlike most writers or poets , who have extraordinary experiences or travel a lot,she seldom left her house n hardly ever saw anybody.Yet she wrote wonderful poems about nature,love,life n death.Her poems are short n not hard to read,but they have deep meanings.In "If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking',the poet believes that helping n comforting a person or even a creature make one's life worthwhile:"if I can ease one life the aching,Or cool one pain,or help one....robin/onto his nest again,i shall not live in vain."
She was indeed an extremely intelligent,highly sensitive,n deeply passionate person.By Elizabeth
