這首歌，在民間流傳著幾種不同的解讀方式。不過多數人相信，這首歌應該指的是男女關係，要不然就是宗教信仰。U2的主唱Bono自己也說過，這首歌在創作時，他們就已經設想好，聽這首歌時，每個聽眾會根據自己的人生經驗，而產生完全不同的感受和聯想。而U2認為，這樣會增加聽眾的想像空間，比起清楚表達詞意的歌曲，這首歌能接受幾種不同的觀點來解讀它，反而比較有趣。
